WHAT'S UP WITH CHAYN?
A monthly email with all that’s happening in the Chayn universe. p.s. Chayn چین is an Urdu word and it means ‘solace / peace of mind’.
< WHAT’S THE BUZZ? >
Happy birthday, Chayn Pakistan! The 14th of August (also, fittingly, Pakistani Independence Day!) marks three years since our launch in 2013.
Our volunteer Diana created a podcast on Anxiety for our Mental Health Toolkit Series. You can listen to the calming audio here to learn about the signs and symptoms of anxiety, and what it means.
We had an awesome ‘gif making’ sprint for our Privacy Guide! Our volunteers learned a fun new skill and we’ve got some great graphics for the guide. Yay for learning new things! Just one of the awesome reasons we love volunteering at Chayn.
Snap Counsellors was featured in the very cool marketing mag The Drum. They loved our use of Snapchat and our PSA. FYI: We’re looking for counselling partners in other countries & languages, so get in touch at snapcounsellors@gmail.com!
We did a beta test round for our Privacy Guide until the 25th of August, asking the general public for feedback, thoughts, and suggestions.
We provided a brief for the world’s first Gender Equality Accelerator (GEA), hosted by Fearless Futures, where 20 ambitious young women and men (aged 16 -20 yrs) came together to explore gender inequalities and social change. You can read more about what the brilliant team did with Chayn’s brief in Afsa’s blogpost.
We had a great Twitter chat with Mandy Sanghera and others on domestic violence and legal aid. You can read more about it, and some of the best tweets in this blogpost written by Kristin.
Avani Parekh and Chayn India did a Twitter chat with Breakthrough India on Intimate Partner Violence, using the hashtag #StandWithMe. You can see the storify here.
HELP our friend Nighat Dad from Pakistan win the Dutch Tulip award. With the funds from the award she has promised to open the first cyber harassment helpline for Pakistan. This will help a lot of the women that come to Chayn Pakistan for advice. Go to this link, submit your vote and don't forget to confirm your vote through email.

< PROJECT UPDATES >
Chayn Italia has launched a MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) in collaboration with Naples’ Federico II° University and Una Stanza Tutta Per Se’ women’s aid center: sign up to learn more about domestic violence and how to tackle it (in Italian with English translation - starting 14th November 2016)
The Italian team is also doing a radio show featuring news on women’s rights from around the globe. Here the fourth and fifth episodes. They’re in Italian!
Afsa wrote a blogpost on the "Synthesis Meeting" we had with Snook, SafeLives, and Comic Relief in July, where we discussed our findings and shared what we have learnt thus far for our Tech Vs Abuse project which explores how technology helps/harms women in abusive relationships.
We are hosting a workshop for Tech Vs Abuse together with Snook and SafeLives on Thursday the 29th of September 2016 from 12:00 to 16:00 (BST) at Newspeak House - 133 Bethnal Green Rd, London, E2 7DG, UK to explore how technology could be harmful and/or helpful to women experiencing abuse. If you are a woman with experiences of domestic abuse who is over 18 years old and would like to join us, you can sign up here.
Seerat has been working on the Campus Abuse Guide for Chayn Pakistan.
Soul Medicine has seen some great progress on the development part and will move into a first pilot phase soon.
< NEW PROJECTS & COLLABORATIONS >
We started writing up a guide on ‘How To Deal With Manipulative People’ hoping it will help people recognise and handle manipulative behaviours in their everyday lives.
We also created a 'Want to volunteer for Chayn? Read this first' document to give prospective volunteers a better understanding of what to expect when volunteering with Chayn.
< STUFF THAT DOESN'T FIT UNDER A HEADING >
Hera gave a short talk at Girl Effect’s first birthday celebration on the 1st of September along with four other inspirational speakers which represent what the organisation stands for.
Volunteer of the monthEvery month we choose a few volunteers that have gone above and beyond. They get a special mention and lots of love! For August, these people were the chosen ones:
Afsa Akbar for representing us at Fearless Futures’ Gender Equality Accelerator. You can connect with her on LinkedIn or Twitter.
Sam Carroll for her hard work on the Privacy Guide and ‘gif making’ sprints. Special shout out to Sam’s adorable Chayn furball, Securicat, who’ll be making her debut on the Privacy Guide!
Diana Tso for her awesome work on recording the Anxiety podcast from Chayn’s Mental Health Toolkit! You can connect with Diana on Twitter and Instagram, too.
